Therapeutic Ultrasound
Therapeutic ultrasound has been used by physiotherapists since the 1940’s. It uses electrical impulses to treat soft tissue injuries speeding and enhancing recovery from injury.
The treatment promotes healing by increasing local blood flow in such tissues as muscles, tendons, connective tissue and ligaments. Ultrasound is typically used for:
- Muscle or tendon strains/tendonitis
- Sprains
- Muscle spasms
- Scar tissue
- Local swelling
- Inflammation
- Myofascial pain
During the treatment, gel is applied to the skin, which help the sound waves evenly penetrate. Some people feel a mild pulsing during ultrasound therapy, while others may feel a slight warmth in the skin. Don’t be surprised, however, if you feel nothing at all, apart from the cold gel on your skin.
Ultrasound in physical therapy is not to be confused with diagnostic ultrasound, which is used to see inside the body.
